When we coach a football team, or any youth sports team, we usually we initially volunteer because we have a kid on the team. That’s where it begins, but it last much longer.
Today while walking to my car in the parking lot, I heard my name called “Coach Ragland, Coach Ragland”. I looked as two imposing, towering young men walked towards me. At first I didn’t recognize them, but I soon realized it was two of my favorite players from 4 years ago, Sidney and Stanley, the identical twins that I couldn’t tell apart unless they had their numbers on.
We talked a while and I was so proud at the young men they had become. I was even more proud they went out of their way to come see their old coach and give him a hug.
This is why I coach.
